Ballarat Golf Club

2019 11 aboriginal champs

'69 golfers from all over Australia came to Ballarat Golf Club in the week of 4th to 8th November to contest the 40th Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Golf Championships.

The Mens’ winner on 288 was Ballarat Golf Club member Aaron Clarke who played superb 2nd and 3rd rounds of 68 and 69. He felt some pressure on the back 9 of the 4th day but hung on to beat David Fahey of Redcliffe (Queensland) by 5 shots.

Lorna Serai Forrest of Mackay (Queensland) won the Womens’ division from Glennis Warrior of Mallala (South Australia).

The contestants especially those from Northern Territory and Queensland found the Ballarat weather to be a little cool, but the hospitality was warm. 14 local players came to play in a team competition on Monday 4th November and most teamed up with 3 visitors and gave useful insights into the play of each hole and how to put up with the rain showers. Unluckily for the locals they were not quite numerous enough to have one in the winning team which was John Egan, Nakia Firebrace, and Gary Fitzgerald of Victoria with Garth Dodd of South Australia.

Each State hosts this event in turn and so it will be some time before it returns to Victoria; however contestants take away with them pleasant memories of how well Ballarat Golf Club hosted the event.'

The Ballarat Golf Club would like to thank Julian Land of the Indigenous Golf Association of Victoria for this write up and to local Aaron Clarke and the whole Association for bringing this fantastic event to Ballarat.
